Thuli has joined the Artroute team as a Johannesburg Art Specialist.

Thuli Mlambo-James is a dynamic creative arts practitioner and curator, who boasts over a decade of international project management experience. Her adaptability to diverse cultural contexts stems from extensive travels and a diverse background.

In 2023, Thuli completed a year-long International Curatorial Practice program at Node Center School of Curatorial Practice in Berlin, refining her commitment to advancing curatorial practices globally.

Her professional journey spans roles such as Events Manager for the South African High Commission in London and International Media Administrator for MTV UK and Media24 Magazines UK. Thuli has also made significant contributions to organisations such as VWV Group SA, Bluemoon Events &
Communications, Endemol TV, and the Encounters Documentary Film Festival in South Africa.

In 2017, she made history as the first Black female Director of The Bag Factory Artists’ Studios in Johannesburg, later establishing Ujamaa Arts in South Africa. This visionary initiative focuses on art curation, content development, exhibitions, artist management, and socially engaged artistic practice, fostering collaboration for the growth of the South African art ecosystem.

Thuli’s influence extends globally as an art sales consultant and curator, notably co-curating the South African pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022. Her recent endeavours include curating an exhibition of films, with the Mental Health Art Space in Berlin in 2023 and a travelling exhibition during the Cape Town Artfair 2024, culminating in Berlin as part of the Gallery Berlin Weekend.

Through her work, Thuli catalyses social change by empowering artists to reach diverse audiences and create impactful work, advocating for the
value and empowerment of artists as catalysts for change worldwide.
